Shade balls are floating, UV-stabilised HDPE spheres that cover an open water surface to shade it from the sun. By blocking sunlight they hold back algae and light-driven chemistry in drinking water, and by blanketing the surface they cut evaporation and keep out birds and debris. They come solid for sheltered water, or with a hole that can be part-filled with water for weight and wind resistance on exposed reservoirs. At 100 mm, about 116 cover a square metre, and made from a durable food-grade plastic they last many years in constant sun. Used on potable-water reservoirs, tailings and process ponds and open tanks.
Solid vs water-fillable:
| Type | Weight | Wind resistance | Best for |
|---|
| Solid shade ball | 40 g | No | Sheltered reservoirs and ponds |
| Water-fillable | 40 g / 240 g filled | Yes | Exposed, windy reservoirs |
