Porous Ceramic Balls

Porous ceramic balls are alumina ceramic spheres punched with through-holes, used as tower packing and support media in industrial columns and high-temperature service. The holes raise the surface area and the void fraction, improving gas and liquid contact and cutting weight and pressure drop, while the alumina body resists corrosion, heat and wear.

  • Perforated structure: punched holes give a high surface area and an open void fraction.
  • High-temperature: works in service up to about 1700°C.
  • Corrosion-resistant: stands up to acids, alkalis and aggressive media.
  • High strength and wear resistance for a long service life.
  • Sizes Φ6 to Φ75 mm, for ceramics, chemical and mineral processing.

FAQs

What are porous ceramic balls used for?

Porous ceramic balls are used as tower packing and support media in industrial columns, scrubbers and high-temperature equipment. The through-holes give a high surface area and an open structure, which improves the contact between gas and liquid, spreads the flow, and lowers the weight and the pressure drop compared with a solid ball. The alumina body handles heat and corrosive media.

What makes them porous and how are the holes made?

The balls are alumina ceramic with holes punched through the body, which is where the porous name comes from. The holes open up the surface and the void space, so more of the ball meets the process stream. The ceramic is then fired to a hard, corrosion-resistant body around the holes.

What sizes are available?

The balls are made across a wide range, from Φ6 up to Φ75 millimetres — 6, 8, 10, 13, 16, 20, 25, 30, 38, 50, 60 and 75 mm — with other sizes to order. The size is chosen from the column and the duty.

What is the minimum order and packing?

Minimum order goes by the size and the quantity; bulk ships by the tonne in cartons or ton bags. The balls are supplied clean and dry. Send the sizes and the amount for a quote.

The through-holes are what set a porous ceramic ball apart from a solid one. By opening up the surface and the void space, they give better gas-liquid contact and a lower pressure drop, which makes the balls useful as tower packing rather than only as a load-bearing bed. The alumina body carries the corrosion resistance, the strength and the high-temperature tolerance, up to about 1700°C, so the balls hold up in demanding columns and kilns. Supplied in Φ6 to Φ75 mm, clean and dry.
